Overcoming Fear: Start Your Practice

As a therapist, I know firsthand the powerful grip that fear can have on us. It's not just something our clients grapple with; we therapists face it too, especially when it comes to starting our own practices. The fear of failure, of not being good enough, of not having enough clients—these thoughts can paralyze us and prevent us from taking the leap into building the practice of our dreams.

But fear doesn't have to be the end of the story. It can be the beginning of something incredible if we choose to confront it head-on. So, if you're a therapist struggling with the fear of starting your own practice, you’re not alone.

  1. Acknowledge the Fear: The first step in overcoming any fear is acknowledging its presence. Admit to yourself that you're scared, and that's okay. Fear is a natural response to the unknown and we weren’t taught how to start businesses in grad school.

  2. Identify the Root Cause: Take some time to explore why you're feeling afraid. Is it a fear of failure? Or perhaps a fear of success? Understanding the underlying reasons behind your fear can help you address it more effectively.

  3. Challenge Negative Thoughts: Our minds have a tendency to magnify our fears and doubts. When negative thoughts start creeping in, challenge them with evidence to the contrary. Remind yourself of your qualifications, experience, and passion for helping others.

  4. Start Small: Building a therapy practice doesn't happen overnight, and that's okay. Start by taking small steps towards your goal. Maybe it's reaching out to potential clients, networking with other therapists, or setting up a website. Break the process down into manageable tasks and tackle them one at a time.

  5. Seek Support: You don't have to go through this journey alone. Reach out to mentors, colleagues, or even a therapist of your own for support and guidance. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your abilities.

  6. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself throughout this process. You're stepping into uncharted territory, and it's natural to feel scared or unsure at times. Treat yourself with the same compassion and understanding that you offer your clients.

  7. Visualize Success: Take some time each day to visualize yourself succeeding in your practice. Imagine seeing a full schedule of clients, making a positive impact in their lives, and feeling fulfilled in your work. Visualizing success can help shift your mindset from fear to confidence.

Breaking out of the fear of starting a therapy practice is no easy feat, but it is possible. By acknowledging your fear, challenging negative thoughts, and taking small steps towards your goal, you can overcome the obstacles standing in your way. Remember, you have the skills, the passion, and the resilience to create the practice of your dreams. Believe in yourself, and the rest will follow. I would love to help you get there!
